Who We Are
WVVY today is a project, a proposal to our community, and a promise.
The Project
The project began in 1999, when a dedicated group determined to focus their energies to provide our island community with alternative, diverse, commercial-free, free-form radio. At first, they had no clue how they could pull this off short of a guerilla stratagem. A few months later the FCC announced a new, low-power FM service that made radio licenses available to local, non-profit groups, known as low-power FM (LPFM).
Applications from Massachusetts were initially accepted in June, 2001. Martha’s Vineyard Community Radio, Inc, was thus formed to secure such a prize and finally did so in December, 2004, having been assigned the call letters WVVY and a frequency 93.7 MHz.
Since then the group has morphed, grown, and developed into a functioning organization in the form of the fund-raisers held so far and is grooming itself for the challenge and responsibility of creating, funding, and running the best radio Martha’s Vineyard has yet heard. With no secure source of initial funds, we who are championing this venture rely totally on our faith in this, our community to both perceive the value in this offering and to provide the resources to make it happen.
We hope to get on-air during the summer, 2006.
The Proposal
The proposal is simple. Martha’s Vineyard Community Radio, Inc. proposes to provide the technical, managerial, and physical infrastructure for FM radio transmission to our local community. That resource, thus created, shall be made openly available to the community in keeping with however the community responds to the opportunity.
The organization has no delusion of profit in the traditional sense but is confident of a return on whatever investment our neighbors are willing to venture in something far more valuable. A sense of community is built upon communication; and as our island grows, those with whom we seek to communicate become more scattered, more diluted in ever expanding activities, and unacceptably removed from too many aspects of life here. We seek to offer a forum to allay this symptom of urbanization.
If this community will allow it, we propose to provide as many as possible who step forward with a desire and a viable concept access to time on air. This project is open to all. Indeed, we seek as many folks who can find the time to become involved in whatever capacity they may feel comfortable and contributive. And, moreover, we are confident in the breadth and depth of talent and energy of our local fellows that therein lies the fodder for high-quality, stimulating radio.
The Promise
Our promise is likewise simple. Give us the opportunity and this proposal will allow our community to shine in ways unheard heretofore, will allow a sense of fellowship and engagement limited only by our collective imagination.
The word community is ubiquitous here for a good reason. That’s what it is all about.
If this community will allow it, WVVY will provide an open, community-based, non-commercial radio service for Martha’s Vineyard.
If this community will allow it, WVVY will broadcast programs designed to serve the needs of those not fully served by other broadcast media and will allow a voice for those not normally heard.
If this community will allow it, WVVY will celebrate and reflect the extraordinary diversity of our Island people. Music will be presented in a freeform format. News and public affairs shows will focus on Island issues, supplemented by national news services as needed and possible.
If this community will allow it, the community itself will define the nature of this station, as it evolves organically, responding to the desires and input from staff, volunteers, and community members.
We shall do our best to see this to fruition. If this community will allow it. Join us today.
